Everyone is NOT Doing It! The widespread impression that the norm for today’s young people is heavy alcohol consumption simply isn’t true. By arming students with the truth about responsible and moderate consumption of alcohol by their peers, heavy drinking drastically declined over the last ten years, especially among freshmen. While each university's statistics are different, the message is similar: The majority of students drink moderately or abstain.

Most Students Drink Moderately

  • 63% of students consume an average of 4 or fewer drinks per week.
  • 61% of students consumed 4 or fewer drinks the last time they socialized.
  • 64% of students remained legally sober the last time they socialized (below .08 BAC).

It may surprise you to know that most students are concerned about potential risks associated with alcohol and protect themselves by drinking moderately - here's what they say:

  • "Always know your limit."
  • "Don't set your drink down and come back later to get it - hold on to it at all times."
  • "Always go out with a group of good friends who will watch out for you and vise versa."
  • "Drink responsibly and designate a non-drinking driver or leave your car at home."
  • "Don't play drinking games."

And there's more...

  • 91% of college students don't drive after having 5 or more drinks.
  • More than 60% of college students report never drinking and driving during the previous year.
  • 85% of college students NEVER drive in an alcohol-impaired condition during the academic year.
  • The majority of college students do not participate in heavy alcohol consumption (5 or more drinks per occasion).
